Shane Cheek

Entrepreneur and founder of Innovation Bay

Shane is Founder and Managing Partner of Acumen Ventures, an Australian based venture capital firm investing in enterprise technology companies in Australia and South-East Asia.

Prior to this he was Managing Director of Method Advisory, a boutique growth strategy and transaction advisory firm working with over 70 companies in Australia and South-East Asia.

Previously, he was an Investment Manager with Playford Capital, South Australia’s leading early stage venture fund where he led software investments in areas including logistics optimisation, infrastructure planning and network security. As part of a regionally focused fund, Shane helped secure over $120 million of co-investment for portfolio companies from Australia, Europe, USA, Japan and South-East Asia.

For several years, Shane worked in strategy consulting for the Australian Institute for Commercialisation. In this role, he worked with high growth Australian companies in industries including consumer internet & media, medical devices, enterprise software, mobile, geospatial imaging and mining technology.

For six years, he worked in university research commercialisation where he was involved in the creation of start-ups including: Cohda Wireless (Strategic investment from Cisco and NXP Semiconductor), A-Rage (Augmented Reality Gaming) and GLA Pty Ltd (Acquired by GLI, world’s largest testing & certification company for the gaming industry).

Shane started out his career as an entrepreneur, co-founding companies in marketing analytics (DataShark) and technology services (Realize Technology).

He has previously been an Adjunct Faculty Member (Product Management) at Carnegie Mellon University, and currently teaches Entrepreneurial Strategy and Finance at the University of Adelaide and Ngee Ann Institute Singapore and the Strategy Consulting capstone program at Flinders University.
